2) Stern, Robert, S., et al. (1998) “Oral Psoralen and Ultraviolet-A Light (PUVA) Treatment of Psoriasis and Persistent Risk of Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer”: This cohort study of 1,380 psoriasis patients provides follow-up to previously published data by the same authors. With the additional years of follow-up, the study demonstrates that coal tar in combination with ultraviolet-B (UVB) treatments for Psoriasis patients results in a statistically significant Odds Ratio of 1.4 for squamous cell carcinoma. The authors conclude that their study may “underestimate the carcinogenic effects of these exposures”.
